Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie 'in line for Ballon d'Or award'

Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney will be England’s sole representative for the coveted Ballon d’Or, according to Spanish reports.

The 26-year-old forward is included on the initial 50-man shortlist for the World Player of the Year award, according to El Mundo Deportivo, who claim to have their hands on the secret nominations.

Rooney will reportedly be joined by his United team-mate Javier Hernandez, as well as Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie, Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, Rafael van der Vaart of Spurs, and Manchester City duo Sergio Aguero and David Silva.
Champions League holders Barcelona have a whopping ten players up for the gong, including last year’s winner Lionel Messi, plus Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Cesc Fabregas, Gerard Pique, Carlos Puyol, David Villa, Dani Alves, Eric Abidal and Alexis Sanchez.

Real Madrid also have a strong contingent on the list, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Iker Casillas, Xabi Alonso, Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira all getting the nod.

Bayern Munich's Bastian Schweinsteiger, Phillip Lahm, Mario Gomez, Thomas Müller, Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben and now-Lazio striker Miroslav Klose are included.

Wesley Sneijder and Diego Forlan of Inter Milan also make the cut, although there is no mention of any representatives from Italian champions AC Milan, which may come as a shock to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

However, El Mundo Deportivo don’t provide a full list of nominees so there could still be hope yet for the big Swede, as well as other Ballon d’Or hopefuls including Juan Mata, Nani and Pedro.
