Betting: Top marksman

Manchester United fans looking to support the Reds next season while making a handsome profit should dash to Betfair’s top Premier League goalscorer market. There you'll find the tempting option of backing either Javier Hernandez or Wayne Rooney at around 10 (9-1) to finish 2011/12 top of the pile.

Those are interesting odds given neither man came too close to team-mate Dimitar Berbatov or ex-Red Carlos Tevez last season, players who presumably have half a golden boot each on their Manchester mantelpieces after both finishing on 20 goals.

Both finished the season in fine form, though, and look likely to begin the imminent campaign as Sir Alex’s first-choice strike pairing. The suggestion here would be to back both Hernandez and Rooney at 10 (combined odds of 5.5 (9-2)) which offers some protection should one suffer long-term injury.
Of course, there are bound to be threats to your cash when backing 9/1 shots.

According to Betfair customers, the chief opposition next season will come from a trio of proven Premier League performers.

Robin van Persie is the 9.2 (8/1) market favourite, but the Dutchman is one of the most injury-prone strikers in the league. Though prolific, he is odds-on to miss significant chunks of the season.

Next, believe it or not, is Chelsea’s Fernando Torres at 9.8 (9-1). A big scorer in the past, he looked potentially finished toward the end of last season during a woeful run. A watching brief has to be advised before backing him over more trustworthy rivals.

At a similar price - 10 (9/1) - is Carlos Tevez, who has to be rated as the major danger to United’s double attack. But will last season's Manchester City skipper even be around to find the net when the new season kicks off? Again, wait and see before spending your money here.

As for Dimitar Berbatov? Well, he's trading at a very attractive (for small stakes) 32 (31/1).
